Mike & Crash on ABC NewsMaker

Mike and Crash were recently guests on the ABC NewsMaker show on Channel 2 in Nashville.

Crash is certified by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and serves as a wildlife ambassador for Wild Ones. He helps raise awareness about the importance of wildlife and the need to protect these animals. Mike said, “Although he’s a possum, Crash represents all wildlife, reminding people that each wild animal, even those as misunderstood as possums, has unique gifts.”

A few years ago, Mike and his wife found a couple of injured animals and realized there wasn’t a place in Sumner County that could help them. They spent quite a bit of time trying to find homes for these animals, and eventually decided that Sumner County needed a dedicated place to care for injured or orphaned wildlife. It took some time, but Mike was able to get licensed for a couple of different species, and that’s how Wild Ones got started.

The host asked what people should do if they come across wildlife. Mike replied, “First of all, I’d like to say that not every animal you see is friendly like Crash. If you find wildlife, the best thing to do is give me a call or contact the TWRA.”

If you’re not in Sumner County, you can visit the TWRA website to find a licensed rehabilitator in your area. They’ll be able to help you determine the best course of action for that particular animal.

In response to a question on how people can help Wild Ones, Mike emphasized the need for more space. He also talked about the need for more volunteers. He stated that students might be able to earn credit hours from their school for volunteering. Wild Ones is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so everything is legit.
